Cardi B Wore Drugstore Makeup In Her “Bartier Cardi” Music Video

The anticipation for Cardi B ‘s debut album, Invasion of Privacy, was high before (like, trending topic high) — but it’s at a fever pitch now, thanks to her “Bartier Cardi ” music video. It’s the perfect blend of hood and haute couture, and contains SO much good glam, too. But with hairstylist Tokyo Stylez on the wigs and makeup artist Erika La Pearl on the beat, what else would you expect?

Because Cardi is dressed in vintage Dior and dripping in diamonds, you’d think that her makeup would be just as expensive. “I still prefer my drugstore finds,” La Pearl tells Refinery29. “People are sending me all kinds of stuff, but I find myself hitting up the makeup aisle all the time.” That accessibility is one of (many) reasons why the world can’t stop talking about the beautiful Bronx native. Get the exclusive breakdown of her music video looks, ahead.

“We were going for a vintage theme,” La Pearl says. “So we needed to do a very good cat eye and lots of color.” The pro started with L’Oréal’s Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation (buffed on with Artis brushes) to make her skin even and radiant. She concealed any spots with LA Girl HD Pro Conceal… but didn’t need to do all that much. (Have you seen Cardi without makeup?) “She has combination skin, and doesn’t really get all that oily,” La Pearl notes. “That’s one thing that I never have to worry about: sweating.”

For the cat eye, she used Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Gel Eye Liner (“It does not move at all,” La Pearl says) and BH Cosmetics’ Take Me Back To Brazil palette, currently on sale for $13.50. Bardi loves herself a bargain, no?

To match those “bloody shoes,” La Pearl combined Chanel’s Rogue Allure Velvet Luminous Velvet Red in No. 2, along with Ofra Cosmetics Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Ultimate Red.

That killer highlight was the finished result of masterful mixing as well. “Oh honey, I’m using at least five glows,” she says. “I actually use a cream-based highlighter underneath her foundation. She doesn’t get enough sleep, so I do a glow all over so it hits everything.” For this video, La Pearl swept on Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter followed by Milani’s Stellar Lights Highlighter Palette in Holographic Beams.

And again, because Cardi’s skin is so flawless, La Pearl never has to worry about her getting too dewy. On the rare occasion that it happens, she’ll spray a little bit of Smashbox’s Photo Finish Primer Water to reset everything. “That’s the trick to not having her face get cake-y throughout a long shoot,” she says.

La Pearl is just as extra as her client (in the best way possible!), and she didn’t hold anything back for this look. She glued on two pairs of Goddess falsies from Lilly Lashes and curled them to make her eyes look bigger. “When she doesn’t use lashes, her eyes look small,” La Pearl says. “When we go full, you see everything. It took a while for her to get used to how heavy they are, but they grew on her once we started using the wispy ones.”

Those pastel lips were a combination of two drugstore picks: Milani Amore Matte Lip Créme in Stunning and Pretty. She topped it off with a cheapie clear gloss that cost her $1. You can take the girl out of the Bronx, but you can’t take her out of her favorite beauty supply store.
