Part-time work popular among women

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has found that women are more likely to work part-time than men, especially in the years immediately after completing a degree. A year after graduation, 30% of women worked part-time, compared to 14% of men.

By nine years after graduation, just 10% of men worked part-time, compared to 67% of women with an MBO diploma. One reason for this difference is that women are often trained to work in sectors where part-time work is the norm, such as education and healthcare. However, life-defining events such as cohabitation and childbirth also play a role in women’s career choices.

The Dutch government hopes to improve gender equality by promoting accessible childcare, good leave arrangements and breaking gender stereotypes. The Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Dijkgraaf, believes that cultural change is necessary to improve the position of women in the workforce.
