ThembelihleAbout 500 Thembelihle residents, south of Johannesburg, started their protest against the housing and water grievances on Monday. That led to the running battles between police and demonstrators this week as protesters fired at police, a school and a town councillor’s home to show their anger. To control the situation, police tried to disperse the crowd through firing of rubber bullets at them. However, nobody got injured in this firing. For the charges of creating public violence and malicious damage to the property, thirty eight people were arrested. Charges against 14 people arrested during service delivery protests in Thembelihle, were withdrawn in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for not having enough evidence.

Before that, it was told that a Thembelihle informal settlement resident was shot and wounded allegedly by police on Tuesday night. His neighbors reported, he did nothing to provoke the officers. One police officer, a boy and a girl were reported to be injured during the protest chaos. However, the damages have been reported to cost around R1.5 million to the municipal electricity utility, city power alone. The other damages include breaking the street lights and setting the small distribution houses on fire.

The police said that the situation is calm for now but patrolling is continued. Police have warned public to stay away from the roads and asking the travelers to take alternate routes for their own safety.
