Minister-Nkoana-MashabaneA demand have been put forth by the opposition parties from International Relations and Co-operation Minister, Nkoana- Mashabane to return the R235, 343 of taxpayers’ money she used on a private jet after refusing to give her handbag for search at Oslo airport this month.

Minister had been found involved in an embarrassing and expensive argument with airport security in Oslo at the end of a state visit to Norway. It is reported that she refused to pass her handbag through an x-ray scanner, as a result of this prolonged argument; she missed her scheduled commercial flight to Bulgaria. She was then transported through a privately hired jet plane which cost the South African taxpayer R235, 343, according to a figure released by the department of IR and Co-operation.

DA national spokeswoman, Lindiwe Mazibuko said that such vanity driven expenses should not be entertained by government that increase the burden on the general public from the so called public servants. She further suggested the government to treat all fairly and on same grounds and there should be no provision that allows members of the executive to bill the public for their superiority complexes. Minister Nkoana-Mashabane should be made to pay back the cost of the chartered flight out of her own pocket.

The handbag incident in Oslo reveals the fact that the current government overlooks the economic realities of the majority of South Africans. In the response of hand bag search scandal, the department insisted that the Vienna Convention exempted diplomats from luggage searches at airports. It sets forth the right of minister to insist upon passing without being checked under the diplomatic immunity.
