The United Nations Security Council has decided to turn down its approval for foreign military intervention in Libya, which gave NATO a freeway to attack Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s forces for the period of civil war that eventually took his life.

William Hague, Foreign Secretary said: “Ending the no-fly zone and the civilian protection provisions demonstrates that Libya has entered a new era.”

Such decision from the UNSC was unforeseen; however, it came despite latest reservations in Libya that the hidden partisans of Colonel Qaddafi might still be roaming around freely. Libya fears the grouping of such enthusiasts which might lead to some new problems in near future.

On Wednesday, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, president of the interim Libyan government said that he requested NATO to stretch its operations in Libya till the end of 2011. In order to discuss the call, NATO ministers are going to meet on Friday at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

“This marks a really important milestone in the transition in Libya,” Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said. “It marks the way from the military phase towards the formation of an inclusive government, the full participation of all sectors of society, and for the Libyan people to choose their own future.”
