Mr. John Penn cutting the ribbon to open the trade fair as government officials and the Ambassador of Kenya to South Sudan look on [©Gurtong]In his opening remarks, Mr. John Penn said that, “this occasion is very important to us. South Sudan has a lot of potential with a lot of resources and colourful people. It is now time for Kenyans who have been with us during the struggle and now during the peace.”

Mr. Penn who is also the Director General of Planning in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment continued that, “our economic policy is open for everybody but you need to have proper documents before you operate. We have a lot of businesses but we have nothing at this point of time because our resources are not yet tapped. Our markets are full of commodities from various countries and you will not be surprised to see that most are from Kenya.”

The Ambassador of Kenya in South Sudan, Mr. Cleland Leshore said the government of South Sudan has unwavering supporting for the Kenyans and he said that the Kenyan government is proud to the associated with the achievements of the Kenyan companies and business in South Sudan.

“I therefore call upon the Kenyan business fraternity to continuously improve its products and endeavour to break new grounds by investing in other States of South Sudan to meet the needs of the people,” Ambassador Leshore stressed.

“I wish to emphasize that the greatest contribution by Kenyans in South Sudan should not be over and above making profits but building the local capacity. I therefore encourage Kenyan investors and companies to give more opportunities to South Sudanese nationals by offering them employment, internships and mentoring them,” he expounded.

The organizing Chairman of the Trade Fair, Mr. Karegwa Muchiri said the fair will run for four days and various companies are showcasing their products.

“There are various companies exhibiting from Kenya, South Sudan and some as far as India. There are various products from companies in exhibitions today like; South Sudan Beverages Limited, Equity Bank among others. Products include; LG TV set,s cloths, farm products among others. There are more than 30 companies and many more are still coming,” Muchiri said.

The Acholi traditional dancers graced the occasion.
