A small generator is connected to more than 40 shops which is higher than its capacity,” the Mayor said

“I have given orders to demolish all these shops within 14 days to the executive director of the Payam and my deputy will supervise. Remove all your things since we are going to demarcate this place again; don’t put even a canopy or tent here.”

The Deputy Mayor, David Lokonga Moses called on the people to cooperate with the government’s plans of reorganizing the city. He said the City Council has a deadline of three months to demolish all markets in the city to enable constructors to start their work then later on the shops will be given back to their rightful owners. He said the fire brigade could not help because there were no proper roads.

The Chairman of Central Equatoria State Chamber of Commerce, Investment and Agriculture, Charles Data Bullen urged the traders register their names and businesses with the City Council and their names will be transferred to the Chamber for compensation in case of an accident. Data blamed the fire brigade for not helping.

“The fire brigade vehicle that came here had very low capacity of water. Let the government reinforce the fire brigade, the fire took more than 14 hours,” Data added.

Lieutenant Abdallah Michael of the fire brigade lamented the losses, and reported that there was only one vehicle available to fight the fire.  He described the accident as an eye opener to the government to provide more fire-fighters that must be on the standby around the clock.

Half of the business in the centre were destroyed in the accident, but no human casualty was reported.
