(L-R) A member of the Concern Group and David Amor Agel addressing the press in Juba [©Gurtong]The Group has lobbied for reformation in the league starting from the grassroots up to the top leadership, accusing the current Youth League leadership of failure to execute the League’s Constitution.

Speaking in a press conference held last Thursday at Home and Away Business Centre in Juba, the Group led by at least 30 members consisting of representatives from the various ten States of South Sudan have launched a wider mobilization in their strategy, accusing the current leadership of silence on activating democratic principles of governing in the league.

This move is the latest political twist in the SPLM signalling crisis in the party to be addressed ahead of an anticipated SPLM National Liberation Council next week, a preparation for the party’s upcoming National Convention in 2013.

The group reported that, the decision was reached due to failure of getting response after writing a petition letter to the Party’s Secretary General, Pagan Amum and the top party leadership  calling for restructuring of the Party’s Youth league including the Women and Syndicated Organization.

They accuse the current SPLM Youth League leadership of overstaying in power since their office term ended in 2010.

Eng. Akol Paul Kordit is the Current Chairman of the SPLM Youth League. The Group accused him of monopoly and that he allegedly holds over three positions that could be filled in by other League members.  The positions include the League’s Chairperson, MP in the National Assembly under the Youth League ticket, Member of the Party’s Political Bureau and National Liberation Council.

However, Mr. Paul declined to comment on the accusations while saying the members referring themselves as “Concern Group” are not bona fide members of the SPLM Youth League and is not a legitimate representative of the Party’s Youth League.

The group has outlined a number of reforms to push for ahead of the anticipated SPLM National Liberation Council meeting and vowed to demand for the changes in the League nationwide.

“We recommended the following three points in that petition;

  1. Urgent dissolution of the current National Executive Committee of the SPLM Youth League,
  2. Formation of an Interim Committee to re-organize the SPLM Youth League from the grassroots for the timely conduct of the Youth League National Convention
  3. Immediately call for the SPLM Youth League National Convention,” the Concern Group press release reads.

The Group said that, SPLM Youth League Constitution 2007, Article 11.5.0 calls for a term of three (3) years in office, hence the term of the National Executive Committee ended two years ago in 2010.

“The current SPLM Youth League leadership as enshrined in the constitution was intended to run the affairs of SPLM Youth League of the entire Sudan to restore the greatness of Sudanese people and mobilization of the society,” Agel Ring Machar, the Concern Group’s Chairperson said.

The Group has also called for a thorough review of the SPLM Youth League’s constitution and all the relevant Youth League pre-independence documents and organs.

“A time has come when we will not leave any stone unturned,” David Amor Majur a member of the SPLM National Liberation Council said during the press conference and added that, youths consist of 70% population in the SPLM Party.
