This was the first commemoration since the country gained her independence last July. Thousands of people including the diplomatic corps gathered at the Dr John Garang Mausoleum in the capital Juba.

Government officials led by the South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit were clad in military attire, perfectly matching the gallant SPLA soldiers. President Kiir called upon leaders and citizens to focus on the prevailing challenges that hinder the growth of the new nation.

He advised the citizens to start developing a spirit of independence and move away from the culture of dependence. “We must try our level best to change the situation. Let’s not rely on others and become addicted to free things”, he told the crowd.

He said the current biting economic challenges are temporary as the government has initiated a number of projects to ensure the country resumes production of her oil.

He at the same time called on the people to concentrate on farming to minimise the high prices of foods and services in the country. President Kiir assured the public of the government’s commitment in handling insecurity in the country which he said affects growth.

The SPLA/M has recognized 16 May as the day that led to the freedom of South Sudan.
