The government spokesman, Information Minister Dr Barnaba Marial told the press in Juba Friday that security will take a chunk of the 6.5 billion South Sudan Pounds budget passed by the cabinet this week.
“Due to the challenging insecurity threats in the country just a year after its independence, the cabinet has resolved to have security as top priority. Other priority areas include health, education, agriculture and infrastructure”, said Dr Marial.
Security has remained a key priority since the establishment of the semi-autonomous South Sudan government in 2005 and consumes a huge percentage of the country’s budget.
Last Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approved the South Sudan 2012/13 austerity budget waiting ratification by the South Sudan National Assembly.
However, despite the government’s yearly allocation to curb external and internal insecurity threats, not much has been achieved in the infant nation with an estimated population of at least ten million.
Early this year alone at least 3,000 people have been reportedly killed in Jonglei State besides other insecurity threats in the rest of the country.
