President Salva Kiir said Monday his government will not accept any African Union (AU) decision backed by the United Nations Security Council that will be considered final and binding with foe Sudan if the conditions are not met.
President Kiir said the AU decisions backed by the UNSC appear to be favouring Sudan’s interest, adding that South Sudan will consider any decision on the border without ruling by arbitration in The Hague as biased.
“The way things are going Khartoum is being favoured and given the areas that do not belong to them. I personally will not accept such a decision because it will be biased”, President Kiir told lawmakers in Juba at resumption of sittings by the National Legislative Assembly.
He said South Sudan is committed to any peaceful means to resolve differences with neighbouring Sudan.
“We are not ready to accept any biased decision from anybody. It is therefore our wish to reach an agreement before anything happens. It will be unfortunate for Khartoum to use force to assert her claims. Should that happen, we reserve the right to self defense under the United Nations charter”, Kiir added.
The AU said last Thursday after talks between Sudan and South Sudan in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa that the two had agreed to a truce, giving in to calls by the international community.
Fresh talks resume on 20 June where the two sides will attempt to reduce tension that has risen, especially after the secession of South Sudan last July.
