President Jacob Zuma was scheduled to leave the country after addressing the Youth Day event in Port Elizabeth at Wolfson Stadium on Saturday.
The president chose to leave a day earlier after being influenced by his close allies. It was announced that Presidency Collins Chabane would be speaking in his place at the rally. It was also unknown why the deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe did not replace Zuma.
G20 summit would be attended by the president tomorrow in Los Cabos, Mexico. It was understood that while Zuma was initially determined he would travel to the Eastern Cape, his close allies managed to convince him not to do so. Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said Zuma’s program was adjusted so that he could attend the event.
Julius Malema, the expelled ANC Youth League leader addressed against Zuma and lablled him as an angry man who is failing to show leadership in the ANC.
Zuma was expected to be booed by the supporters of Malema. He said, “Zuma is an angry man. We regret having a president like Zuma because he does not show leadership. He will not leave a legacy such as that left by former president Thabo Mbeki.” Adding to that, he said, “I urge you to fight fearlessly to ensure that there is a change in the leadership in Mangaung. We cannot afford a situation where we have leaders who suppress the voices of the youth.”
He also said, “Zuma is even confusing himself by focusing on cabinet reshuffles instead of feeding the poor people who are starving of hunger. People are driving in expensive cars and sleeping in luxury hotels while the majority of the people went to bed on empty stomachs.”
