On behalf of the civil society organisations and the citizens of Western Equatoria State, Kussala appreciated the efforts by AU to increase the number of troops deployed in fighting the LRA.

Kussala was speaking in Yambio during the handover of more than 2,500 soldiers to the AU regional task force established to hunt down members of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), the rebel group that started in Uganda, but has become a regional threat.

The African Union regional taskforce tasked with hunting down the LRA is headed by Colonel Dick Prit Olum deputised by Colonel Gabriel Ayok Akuok of Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).

Two thousand soldiers from the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) and 500 from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) were officially handed over.

He stated that the churches in the region have made several attempts by holding conferences and visiting Europe, America and other countries to find solutions to the LRA atrocities in the region.

He appealed to the AU to continue to offer amnesty to the LRA leader in case he needs dialogue as only dialogue can bring about peace in the region.

During the ceremony, Western Equatoria Governor Joseph Bakosoro Bangasi appreciated the move by SPLA to join in the fight against the aggression by the LRA.

“The communities of this state are interested to see that Kony is brought to book in two ways either peaceful which he said will not work, or forceful as the mission states” said Bakosoro.

The governor appealed to the international community to decentralise the support to all the affected countries and the communities.

The ceremony in Yambio was attended by heads of Diplomatic Corps, Defense Ministers and senior military officials from Uganda and South Sudan.
