The ruling alliance in South Africa failed to veil their increasing differences on the 20th death anniversary of communist hero Chris Hani. The top leaders made an appearance in Boksburg, Gauteng where they could not hide their agitation.

The speeches of Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and South African Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Blade Nzimande were deliberate attacks at criticizing one another. Mr. Vavi quoted Hani’s famous statement about not being interested in a government job.

“At a time when many leaders were seeking jobs as government ministers or officials — with better salaries — Chris Hani took on the lowly paid, but politically crucial, position of general secretary of the SACP,” said Mr. Vavi.

The statement was scornful because Hani’s successor, Mr. Nzimande, is the incumbent minister of higher education and training. Among others, Mr. Vavi has openly objected to SACP’s decision of allowing Mr. Nzimande to join the government.

Mr. Nzimande took the opportunity to fire back at Mr. Vavi’s indirect criticism. He said people who do not hesitate to use Hani’s statement to ridicule SACP decisions are mocking his stance. He said Hani was “opposed to the suspension of the armed struggle” but went on to defend the African National Congress’s decision in this regard once his own viewpoint was defeated.

“We can’t cherry-pick, behaving as though we are outside,” he said.
