Authorities in Rumbek North County have reported that cattle raiding attack was carried out by suspected pastoralists from Mayendit and Panyjiar counties of Unity State.

“Youth allegedly to have come from Unity state of Manyendit and Panyjiar Counties of Unity State attacked Rumbek North area of Majak cattle camp killing at least two people and wounded two more others. The attack occurred at 3pm. Right now the situation is quite confusing in the area,” said the County Information Official Peter Makuei Tinyjok.

He described the situation as clam and peaceful but recent cattle raiding provoked the calm relationship.

In January Lakes state military Caretaker Governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol promised to quell down insecurity but his promise failed since communities in remote villages complain of having no protection to their livestock.

Dhuol in January tour covered the greater Yirol counties comprising Awerial, Yirol West, Yirol East and he later held a rally in Rumbek East County, his hometown telling people to register their arms and to set up military bases where hundreds of youth suspected for cattle raiding, road robbery and minor cases were arrested in military prison of Langcok, Ajakangau (Ngatinga) and Pulkuc.

Activist and critical journalists reported several human rights abuses committed in the military cells but the state government still put more harassment on activists and journalists as well censorship increased in local media houses in Rumbek.
