TICAD is a major development platform on African development that discusses and produces action plans to tackle various challenges in Africaon the economy, poverty reduction and post- conflict recovery.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations between Juba and Tokyo governments. “It’s my great pleasure to welcome you here to Japan to discuss the bilateral relations between South Sudan and Japan”, said Abe.

President Kiir expressed gratitude to the government and leadership of Japan for organising and being part of TICAD V conference.

He personally congratulated Abe upon his recent election victorythat saw him become new Japanese Prime Minister.

Underscored the contribution of the Japanese government through its development agency Japan’s International Corporation agency (JICA) to South Sudan.

“JICA has been a strategic player in our struggle for South Sudan. JICA is offering the much needed support to render services for our people in South Sudan”, Kiir said.

After the meeting of the two leaders, the other members of his delegation will meet and discuss further specific bilateral businesses.

The president was accompanied by his Foreign Affairs Minister Nhial Deng Nhial, Minister of Presidency Emmanuel Lowilla, the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Investment Garang Diing (Commerce) and the Auditor General Stephen Wondu.

According to the Press Assistant Secretary in the Japanese Foreign Affairs Ministry, Masaru Sato, 39 African heads of state and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon are expected to attend the three- day TICAD V Conference starting on Friday.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister Desalegn, the Djibouti President Omar Ismail Guelleh, Somali President Hassan Mohamud, the Ghanaian President John Mahama, the Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto are also attending the conference.

TICAD V is being co-organised by the Government of Japan, UN, World Bank, UNDP and AUC.

The Japanese government through JICA is one of the leading donors in South Sudan, with specific support going towards development of infrastructure.

It has supported the construction and repair of several bridges as well as waste management and sanitation. It is currently undertaking a feasibility study with an aim of constructing an alternative multi million bridge across the Nile River in Juba.
