This followed a response by the World Food Programme (WFP) to a request by the State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) for relief food for over 1,400 beneficiaries in Ongebe and Upwo Bomas on Lafon/Lopa County.

The WFP Field Officer in the food security department of Caritas Torit, Ali Juma Angelo disclosed to the press that the General Food Distribution (GFD) programme targets areas in the state where crops were affected by natural disasters such as draught, floods, pests and diseases.

Juma regrettably disclosed that the two trucks were loaded with over 1,000 bags of Sorghum but did not succeed to deliver the supply to the beneficiaries in Lafon/Lopa County.

According to him, Upwo swamp, about 56 kilometres from Torit town had spilled over the road due to heavy rains making it difficult for the trucks to cross.

The 1,020 bags of sorghum were offloaded to a store in Torit town waiting the flooded stretch of the road to dry up so to allow easy access.

Juma lamented that the conditions of the targeted beneficiaries could get worse if the floods continue blocking the way and recommended that air-dropping of the relief be explored.

Juma says that some households in Bur and Hiyala Payams of Torit County are among the targeted beneficiaries apart from the three Kapoeta Counties severely hit by food shortage.
