Governor Rizik Zackaria Hassan said this while addressing the parliamentarians during the opening session on Tuesday.

The Western Bahr el Ghazal state Assembly resumed sittings after a seven-month break where members were asked to move to their grassroots to interact with their communities and learn about the challenges faced at the local level.

The governor said the focus will be on boosting agriculture, mining and other non-oil sectors of the economy to create jobs and rapid development of infrastructure to support economic development including development of alternative export routes for oil and improving basic services in education, health and water for people in the rural areas.

“The state government will be soon reduced from 13 to 8 ministries in line with the national policy of lean government. Therefore, the state assembly is expected to take note of that and the formation of the new specialized committees should be based on the reduced number of the ministries in the state,” said Hassan.

He said President Salva Kiir Mayardit told governors’ recently in Juba to reduce the government size at the state level as a move to reduce the high expenses’ and allow services to reach the people for development.

He also said that Kiir advised them as governors to work hard in organizing the ruling party SPLM at the state level to work effectively.

On state development, the governor said the government will focus all its efforts in the coming year to tarmac internal roads Wau town in addition to connecting counties and payams with the state headquarters as well as opening feeder roads connecting farmers to markets.

The governor also mentioned that his state is planning to host an investment forum with objective of reaching sustainable agricultural growth in the state by facilitating alignment and partnership among all relevant stakeholders.

Investors from Holland, Germany, Malaysia, India and China are expected to participate; they will engage with the line ministries to explore opportunities of investment in the state.
