Gatwich, a member of Agricultural Specialized Committee at the national parliament, says his visit to the Rice project is to listens to the reports, complaints, progress, challenges and achievements which he will then report to the technical specialized committee in Juba.

“I came specifically to assess the progress of the Rice Scheme as a national project. I would like to also see the achievements made, the challenges encountered and the way forward,” he said.

“We shall work together on this specific national project so that we avoid challenges hindering development.”

He assured the members of a firm support in making the national project a success in order to boost agricultural empowerment and strengthening food security so as to minimize the poverty higher dependence on importations of foreign consumable goods.

The State Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Hon. Ayii Bol Akol applauded the move aimed at strengthening ties between the national and the state governments in making the project a big success.

“This is a very good and an encouraging initiative. I can say that we are in good track and this is what shows cooperation between the two governments. We all welcome chances of improvements and working together for the people,” Bol told Gurtong.

“We enlisted all our challenges which include lack of advanced tools which are used for farming, weeding, except tools for harvesting and milling which were earlier donated by GIZ. Another challenge is the issue of rain irregularities which needs an alternative solution,” said Bol of the challenges the project.

Aweil Rice scheme as a national and government’s project has been struggling to survive. The project got rescued in 2007 when the European Union funded the project for five years which expired in 2012.

After that,  the implementing partner GIZ had to hand over the equipments to the project team but the project still needs huge capacity building to adequately become self-sustainable.

This year, the project may be lifted a bit as the national government gets involved. Recently, the Deputy National Minister of Agriculture, Cooperatives, Forestry, Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism launched the Rice Mill machine.
