FAO Launches $ 20 Million Food Security Project

The two projects; Agriculture Food Security Information System (AFIS) and Italian Funded Project have been launched as key component projects in Eastern Equatoria State.

Food Security through Commercialization of Agricultural sector in marginalized areas in Kenya and South Sudan under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) framework, with focus on women and youth, has been launched to ensure food security, increase incomes and employment to fight against poverty through modernization of the agricultural sector and the promotion of commercialization strategies in and off-farm.

Together with the FAO, two ministries of Animal Resources and Fisheries and that of Agriculture, Forestry, Irrigation, Cooperatives and Rural Development in Eastern Equatoria have been designated to undertake implementation of the just launched four-year project.

The two key Ministries will maintain their collaborations in the field as the two Ministers move the joint project seeking to improve agriculture production.

The South Sudan FAO Country Representative Dr. Sue Lautze who delivered lectures shortly after the official launch advised the state leaders and beyond to help tune useful messages to the entire citizens in order to produce enough food to fight the ongoing high imports to South Sudan saying there is high potential in the country and efforts must be sped up.

The state Deputy Governor Jerome Gama Surur on thanked FAO management for channelling funds to their affected region.

As he launched the project at Hotel Torit, the Deputy Governor challenged his fellow leaders together with citizens to battle out poverty and hunger caused by modest contribution toward farming commitment. 

The FAO SFE’s Cristina Scarpocci elaborated that the move will help to enable more inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems at local, national and international levels.

She explained that the coming of the project will support sustainable socio-economic development through market-based solutions in the region.

Scarpocci added that one of the project purposes’ is to develop models that reduce dependence of beneficiaries on free inputs and grants and rather encourage ownership, independence and private sector innovations, including co-financing, loan guarantee and asset leasing.
