This was during his tour to the rice scheme where he also pledged to stand behind any active farmers’ unions.

“I am impressed with the way you have mobilized yourselves and formed this strong farming body that helps Aweil Rice Scheme operate for these years especially 2013,” said Machar. “I will try my to bring two combined Harvester machines that can help you for the next few years.”

The farmers’ Union representative Dut Aker said the scheme faced several challenges in 2013 which they expect to be rectified by the national Ministry of Agriculture.

“As you have just walked around our Rice Scheme in NBGS and have seen by yourself what is lacking and what needs to be done, I on behalf of the Farmers’ Union would like to tell you that we would like to be considered in the upcoming budget of your ministry so that we can overcome these pressing problems,” said Ater.

“As we have just got one Rice Mill Machine that helps in splitting the rice, now what remains next is the harvester machine. Can your ministry please try to urgently reach us with one combined harvester machine?”

Over 3,000 feddans of the Rice Scheme cultivated in 2013 is likely to face labour shortage as the scheme depends on insufficient manpower of about 500 labourers.
