Takeshi Akamatsu, the Japanese Ambassador to South Sudan cited improvement of basic economy, social infrastructures, development of alternative industries, improvement on basic living and livelihood and strengthening governance and security as priority areas where the funds have been spent.

The biggest projects will be construction of River Nile Bridge in Juba slated to start next year. The three year-project plan is estimated to cost US$84m.

On Wednesday, the Japanese Embassy and its key implementing partner, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) together with representatives of media agencies in the country toured its projects Juba in an effort to create awareness of their activities in the country.

One of the projects currently on implementation, estimated to cost US$47.7m is improvement of water supply system in Juba which was launched last month. It is expected to benefit approximately 389,000 people in the country’s capital, Juba.

“Of the US$320m, some of the funds have been used already on implemented projects and some are yet to be used,” said the Japanese diplomat.
