The president urged the negotiators to put the interest of South Sudanese first and above personal interests. “I would like them – [negotiation teams] to double their efforts to do the rest of the work which is still waiting to be done,” Kiir said.

“About the release of the detainees; they-negotiating teams- will have to embark on it again so that their release is done through the legal process according to the laws of the Republic of South Sudan.”

On Thursday the government and anti-government negotiation teams under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) inked a deal on cessation of hostilities.

President Kiir expressed delight at the signing of the cessation of hostilities. He said:  “I am happy.”

The peace talks brokered by IGAD are aimed at ending over a month of political turmoil in South Sudan that erupted on 15 last month.

The United Nations so far reports that over 1,000 people have died and over 400,000 more others have been displaced.
