“There is an urgent need for the two ministries to sit down and find everlasting solutions to the issues facing teachers who do not have appropriate appointment while teaching,” said Jano.

The statement come just a few days after many schools, particularly in Jur River county, closed after their teaching staff were relieved by the ministry of Labour. A total of 52 teachers, mainly from Jur River, are being dismissed as a result of what the ministry described as lack of qualifications, no proper appointment and lack of legal documents in their files.

Speaking to Gurtong today, the state assembly chairperson Jano urged the two ministers to settle the issue of un-appointed teachers urgently so that the closer schools could start re-opening as a matter of urgency. She urged the two ministries to form a committee to deal with the issues facing teachers, in order to enable resumption of essential education services.

In addition, she expressed concern about the entitlements of the dismissed staff:  “These are the teachers who had been teaching for a quite long of time and if they are simply dismissed like this, where will they get their pension?” she asked. Meanwhile, in a teacher’s union meeting today at the ministry of Education, the union accused the state assembly, especially Education committee, of not standing with them during their crisis.

Last Tuesday, 5 primary schools in Kuajieno Payam took to the streets, protesting the closure of their schools and calling for the settlement of their teacherss issues. The pupils blocked the road leading from Tonj to Wau with aim of causing destruction to property belonging to the government, which they felt had failed to address their teachers’ problems.

Kuajieno Payam Education supervisor, Albino Dimo Aleu, added his voice to calls for the state government to settlement the issue, by properly appointing the affected teachers. Dimo said that, as a Payam supervisor, he is now in the process of collecting all files relating to the dismissed teachers in order to take them to the Labour ministry for settlement.
