South Sudan is set to have its first railway after a similar launch in Kenya and Uganda.
Minister in the office of the President Awan Guol Riak told the press in Juba that China Harbour Engineering Company [CHEC] has entered an understanding with the South Sudanese government to undertake the infrastructural development.
He told reporters that South Sudanese President Salva Kiir who attended the launch of the standard gaugerailway in neighbouring Uganda had met the CHEC management for talks on the project.
President Kiir was in Uganda where he attended the 52nd Anniversary of the Republic of Uganda on Wednesday, 8 October.
“The company that is working on Juba International Airport will also undertake the construction of the standard gauge railway from Juba to Nimule”, said Hon. Riak.
He added that the railway will link South Sudan to the East African region, adding that it will boost trade across the borders.
CHEC and South Sudan’s Ministry of Transport, Roads and Bridges signed a contract in May this year for the construction of the 165- kilometre railway.
The construction firm’s President Lin Yichong said the signing of the contract was a practice of CHEC inanswering China’s policy of supporting the interconnectivity of the African region.
According to documents seen by Gurtong the construction of the railway line will start from the south of Juba up to the border city of Nimule of Eastern Equatoria, and will occupy 567 hectares.
