The Minster of Parliamentary affairs, Daniel Akol Diing on Thursday said that 11 chiefs were arrested in Northern Bahr el Gazal by the Police Commissioner.

Major General Akot Deng Akot has strongly refuted the allegations saying they are baseless and unfounded.

“I have never thought of becoming a governor of this state or in any other state and I never lobbied for the governorship because am an ordinary police who is tasked to protect the law and the lives of citizens in this country.” Said the police commissioner.

On Wednesday, Shops remained closed and roads leading to neighbouring states and other counties blocked during the arrests.

Deng Akot however agreed that indeed the roads were blocked but explained that it was done for securitypurposes.

“It is true that we as the law implementing agency responsible for crimes and lives of citizens were worried when we heard the news of the strikes organized to happen on Wednesday morning. So we had to put security in place so that these strikes cannot happen because when they happen anything can happen to the citizens and properties, hence we had to prevent it to happen.”

“By doing this, we had to let the roads be blocked because most of these demonstrators were mobilized from the counties of Aweil North, East, South and West by their politicians but we had to block the entrance of those people but without any harassment to them; and on Wednesday morning, we let the shops remain closed because we did not know any outcome yet as this was our duty to protect any crime happening.” He explains.

He said that he defied an order from the Governor when he was asked to shut down the assembly’s meeting because it was not officially in writing.

“Yes, I refused to listen to the governor when he called on Monday to tell me to close the assembly’s meeting but I told him that I would only do it when I receive any written document for future reference not by verbal orders without reference.” He says.

He strongly dismissed the allegations connecting him with the attempted coup in the state, attempts to join the SPLM in opposition and for carrying our unlawful arrests.
Akot has threatened to go to a court of law to sue those accusing him.

“I will wait for the investigating committee to compile its facts-finding about this case and should it appear to mere lies and false accusations on me, I will deal with the perpetrators in the court of law.” He warned.

Akot was accused of instigating a coup against the Caretaker Governor, and unlawfully arrested 11 chiefs and one youth who are reported to be supporters of the Governor.
