South Sudan is rated the highest in maternal mortality in the world with 2,054/100,000 live births.

 
TORIT, 12 March 2015 [Gurtong] – This was announced by South Sudan’s Health Link Manager in Eastern Equatoria State, Miss Auma Sarah.

She revealed that globally estimated 275,000 women die annually during child birth and pregnancy.

She disclosed that health partners in the country have put lots of strategies with declared commitments to confront the menace to end it (highest mortality rate).

The health manager made the remarks on Monday in Torit state capital as EES joined the rest of the nations across the globe to mark the International Women's Day.

Presenting her lengthy report, Miss Sarah presented during the celebration, under the title, 'Save the mothers, safe motherhood, with a vision, “No woman and child should die or be harmed by pregnancy or birth “Said Sarah.

She revealed that one in every 16 women die daily in developing countries compared to developed countries.

The health manager Miss Sarah said that about 20 qualified midwives deliver  2.5 million women of child bearing age, meaning one midwife for every 125, 000 women which affects the quality of service delivered.

She disclosed that adolescent marriage within ages ranging from 15 to 19 years is estimated at 53 percent globally, while in South Sudan, 19 percent of the girls are already house wives by the Age of 15 years with illiteracy level being very high.

"This too contributes to the maternity mortality compounded by the long term political insecurity in the country," she expressed.

She said in Eastern Equatoria State maternity mortality stands at 1,806 per 100,000 live births according to UNICEF 2013 reports.
