WAU, May 13, 2015 [Gurtong] – The embassy’s complain comes just a week after government forces allegedly launched an offensive in home town of rebel leader Dr. Reik Machar northern part of the country, oil rich Unity state.
“The renew fighting was in direct contravention of the cessation of hostilities Agreement honored by both warring parties in earlier 2014,” said the statement.
“We are deeply disturbed by credible reports of grave human rights abuses against civilians in the area around Mayam county and south of Bentiu town,” the statement said.
The Embassy urged the government and the SPLM in Opposition to allow protection actors within the UN to inspect sites where violations are alleged might have taken place.
There is also eye witness and UN reports of mass rapes and killing of civilians by both armies the government forces and the rebels.
The Embassy said those atrocities are the obstacles threatening the peace process in the country as both armies continue fighting and violate the International Humanitarian law calling for accountability against any side who committed the crime.
The Embassy also calls on government forces and Opposition to put down their weapons and end the war in the country.
