The Chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission or JMEC, Former President of Botswana Festus Mogae on Thursday visited Bor and conduct a courtesy meeting with State officials and UNMISS about the implementation of the peace process.

Speaking to the press at the Governor’s office, Mogae said his visit is o ensure that the peace agreement is being implemented in the State. “I have to come and pay my respect to the State Governor who is doing a very good job here in this State [Jonglei]. The peace is holding and that is what we are looking for, that is what we are hoping for in all the other States, There will be peace here so that is all I am here for,” Mogae said.

Mogae who was accompanied by UNMISS State Coordinator and Members of IGAD saidthe Governor briefed them on governments’ efforts towards peace in Jonglei State. Jonglei’s Governor, John Kong Nyuon said the arrival of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Committee Chairperson is a step towards the peace implementation. 

“We briefed him [Mogae] about the situation in the State and we assure him about the commitment of the government and the people of the State for the implementation of the peace. Our people are in need of peace and we want them to come back home from the refugees’ camps and displaced to come and enjoy the peace.”
