Thailand: General Motors Inaugurates its Diesel Engine Plant

General Motors have invested US$200m in establishment of new diesel plant facility at Rayong in Thailand. This is General Motors first diesel engine in the region and is also the first in the world that will be producing the brand new Gm Product: Duramax dour-cylinder diesel engines.

According to the GM spokesperson, this plant has the capability to produce 120,000 engines every year for the vehicles produced not only in South east Asia but across the world. The very first engine of Duramax will be installed in the brand new Chevrolet Colorado Pickup which is expected to be produced in Thailand.

GM Southeast Asia President Martin Apfel, at the inauguration ceremony said, “Producing engines locally strengthens our commitment to the development of a strong Thai automotive industry, which can help guide the growth of the entire Southeast Asian region. It is also a sign of the excellent talent in the local industry and our faith in their capability,”

This investment is expected to create 500 jobs for the locals. And not only that, the utmost care and precision has been taken in the development of this plant with computerized and laser-guided equipments coupled with environmental protection practises to ensure proper working of the facility, which is expected to generate US$94m worth of locally built components.

These will be used to produce engines at the Rayong facility by next year.
