Dir BlastOn Thursday, 31 people were killed and 67 injured when a suicide bomber targeted a funeral gathering of a local man in Peroo village of Lower Dir. This village was located in Jandol town in the district of Lower Dir, 100 KM from the once Taliban-controlled Swat Valley.

The deadly attack was carried out at the funeral of a local leader known as Bakht Sultan, who was a close friend of Muhammad Zarin. According to sources, Zarin was a former Afghan mujahideen commander who was murdered in a suicide attack in Kunar during the month of April, this year. Muhammad Zarin owned land in the Samarbagh area of Lower Dir where his family lived and had dual citizenship of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Salim Marwat, District Police Officer Lower Dir, confirmed that this was a suicide attack that had killed as many as 31 people and left 67 injured. He also stated that the death toll may go high as many injured people are still fighting to survive in the local hospitals, their condition is very critical, as described.

The responsibility for the deadly suicide attack has been accepted by Taliban. They carried out blast to punish local residents who raised a Lushkar against them.  From an undisclosed place, the reporters received a phone call which claimed the responsibility for the blast. They named themselves as Sirajuddin and Maulana Fazlullah, the former is the spokesman for the Tehrik-e-Taliban in Malakand division and the latter is a lieutenant of the Swat Taliban leader.  

The situation in the area has become very critical as this attack means that the Talibanis are growing in the area who also claimed the responsibility for a remote controlled attack, on Tuesday, that killed a local leader of the Awami National Party in the area Lower Dir.
