Snow-fall in SrinagarWith the Jammu-Srinagar highway closure, the Kashmir valley has been cut off from the rest of the country. The temperature is suspended at minus 6 degree Celsius and expected to fall further in the next few days. The power has been restored but only in Srinagar and some major townships.

As the mercury dips further in Kashmir, the suffering of the people especially those living in Muffassil areas have only multiplied. On the outskirts of Srinagar, Families has been cooking on an earthen range for the last four days.

A occupant on outskirt of Srinagar Hafeeza said, “There is no power, no gas available and no facility, we are forced to cook in open.” This is the depressing side of the Kashmir frost story since gas is not easily available and there is no electricity, people have been literally pushed to Stone Age.

In the Kishtwar area of Jammu, heavy snow and power distraction has inspired business. Mohammed Rafi, a salesperson, is earning Rs. 20 with every phone battery and electronic application he charges using his generator. “No power means that I find a new form of business and it is a paying one,” Rafi said.

For the number of marooned commuters and truckers has been piling up for the last four days on the Jammu-Srinagar highway there’s no instantaneous relief in sight. The met department says that the temperature will fall further in the upcoming days.
