The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the director general of the Tamil Nadu Police department over the increased death toll in encounters after the recent killing of 5 alleged bank robbers.

NHRC also addressed the notice to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and District Magistrate of Chennai (DM) seeking a response on the incident and a detailed explanation to the dramatically increasing number of deaths of criminals in encounters. It has also requested a copy of the post-mortem and magisterial inquiry reports for the deceased.

One of the spokesperson of NHRC said, “The commission has directed them to respond to its notices within eight weeks along with the magisterial enquiry report, the post-mortem report, and the independent investigation report into the incident as per the guidelines of the commission.”

Tamil Nadu police claimed that the robbers had opened fire first, injuring two of their police officers leaving them with no choice but to respond. Four of the five dead in the encounter have been identified to be from Bihar as per their national identity cards and driver licenses, whereas one belongs to West Bengal. Vinodh Kumar, Vinay Prasad, Harish Kumar, and Chandrika Ray are the deceased from Bihar. The last one from West Bengal is Abhey Kumar.
