After giving contracting statements quite a few times, the government finally clarified its stance over decriminalization of gay sex in India by declaring to favour it on Wednesday.

The Attorney General speaking on behalf of the government G E Vahanvati informed the Supreme Court that the centre has decided to stick to the verdict announced by the High Court of Delhi on homosexuality.

He said, “We accept the reasoning of the High Court on consensual sex between two adults in private. This is the stand of the Centre. The Cabinet accepted the Group of Ministers’ recommendation of not appealing against the High Court verdict. The Additional Solicitor General had appeared in the High court for the Ministry of Home Affairs. He appeared in the Supreme Court but there has been some miscommunication. Whatever Mr Malhotra said is not the stand of the Home Ministry.”

He also announced that the comments made by the Additional Solicitor P P Malhotra from the Home Ministry were some sort of confusion and the Home Ministry is with the centre in not opposing the decision of the Delhi High Court. The clear cut response from the centre has surfaced as the result of the strict instructions given by the Supreme Court to stop embarrassing themselves by contradicting statements.
