The Deputy Minister of Education Datuk Wee Ka Siong spoke before the media on Monday and said that if the issue of the shortage of teachers in primary Chinese schools is resolved by his resignation, he is more than willing to do it right now.

He gave his statement in response of the several members of the United Chinese School Committee’s Association of Malaysia joined hands with the MCA in the rally on Sunday over the issue being long due and the government not making enough efforts to cater to it. Some of them also demanded that Wee should resign if he cannot solve the problem whereas others got out of control and tried to attack Wee as he was leaving the venue. However, Datuk Wee remained unharmed due to the level of security around him.

Commenting on the misbehavior of the crowd, Wee said that he does not believe that these were real protestors but only a bunch of people from the opposition trying to benefit from the raising issue. He said, “I am sad that the scuffle happened. I feel this issue has been politicized” as one of the reporters asked for his response on the punching attempt and the throwing of water bottles at him at the rally.

Wee said in a statement later in the night the same day and said, “There are other ways to solve this issue. Would jeering and hurling abuses resolve the shortage? And if stepping down would solve this issue once and for all, I, Wee Ka Siong would immediately do so.”
