On Wednesday, a Philippine court approved bail to former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on the election disruption charges after a judge shed doubt on the proof provided against her. But she was not likely to leave detention right away because of a pending corruption case. Lawyers for Arroyo immediately posted the 1 million peso ($23,250) cash bail. T

he court issued an order for her release Wednesday said by Pasay City Regional Trial Court spokeswoman Felda Domingo, but cases pending in other courts would be preventing her from being freed.

The spokesperson of President Benigno Aquino III, Edwin Lacierda said Arroyo still faced a non-bail-able corruption case in the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan. That court had issued an order which was preventing her from leaving the country as well.

Despite the temporary freedom granted to former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Senator Franklin Drilon said that the government would continue to go after her for her alleged crimes. The statement came after Arroyo’s lawyers posted a P1-million bail at the Pasay City Regional Trial Court.

Drilon said in a statement, “The right to bail is the right [of] an accused. But the government will not go slow in prosecuting GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) for her abuses and excesses of her nine-year misrule.” “As P-Noy (President Benigno Aquino III) said in his Sona (state of the nation address), this is not vindictiveness. This is about justice and holding public officials accountable for their actions,” he added.
