Interior Minister Rehman Malik claims that over 69,000 licences for prohibited bore weapons were granted to the members of National Assembly over the last five years. The numbers imply that on average, every member received 200 licences from 2008 to 2012.

Malik was answering to a question posed by Moulvi Asmatullah where he mentioned that on the request of several parliamentarians, the federal government had issued 69,473 prohibited arms licences over the past five years. Malik informed the National Assembly in writing that his ministry issued 11,776 prohibited bore arms licences in 2008; 27,551 in 2009; 5,789 in 2010; 8,369 in 2011; and 15,988 in 2012.

Earlier, an investigation of issuance of prohibited arms licences was ordered by former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. PPP’s Abdul Qadir Patel was tasked to head the inquiry. When Patel was asked to comment on the matter, no response was received from his office.

Official record states that 28,527 licences for prohibited weapons were issued between 2008 and 2009, and 6,000 of them were approved by former minister of state for interior Tasneem Qureshi. Qureshi is now the state minister for water and power.

Malik has repeatedly warned the National Assembly that the government is investigating all licences and those issued in violation of rules would be revoked. Nonetheless, such an action is yet to be taken.

On the other hand, Malik received a show-cause notice by the apex court for his orders to transfer FIA officials investigating the Steel Mills case. Malik submitted an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court, alleging that his act was only intended to gear up the investigation in an efficient manner. He insisted that his plan was never to undermine the dignity and respect of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
