External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid met with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today to discuss the way forward on Italian marines’ issue. The two marines allegedly killed Indian fishermen and managed to escape after deceiving the Supreme Court of India.

Khurshid promised that severe action will be taken against the Italian Ambassador to ascertain that the dignity and primacy of India in this matter is preserved. He said Italy has evidently failed to keep its promise and deceived the Supreme Court.

Khurshid said, “As we take steps will let you know. We have to take steps and there is no question that we won’t take steps… We need to keep the court informed about all decisions… the matter will be treated with greatest urgency.”

The two Italian marines – Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone – have been at the centre of a year-long international row for allegedly shooting dead two Indian fishermen Ajesh Binki and Gelastine after mistaking them for pirates near the Kerala coast in Feb 2012.

The Italian government had demanded the return of the two accused for four days so they could cast their votes in the general election. After vowing to return to India to face murder trial, they announced that they would not turn up to India. The announcement baffled Indian authorities who are now on the verge of taking any possible step to ensure the supremacy of their country stays intact.

Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai summoned Italian ambassador in New Delhi on Tuesday to convey its collective decision that ‘contents of note is not acceptable’ to India.

“We summoned the ambassador of Italy. I summoned him to my office and basically what I told him is that the contents of note, which was given to us conveying the position of the government of Italy regarding the two marines is not acceptable to us,” said Mathai after meeting the Italian ambassador to India Daniele Mancini in his office in New Delhi.
