Samajwadi Party Chief is not satisfied with Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma’s regrets over his remarks against Mulayam Singh Yadav. Samajwadi Party chief has demanded at least a public apology, if not an outright resignation.
“There is a difference between expressing regret and apologizing,” said Mulayam.
According to Mulayam, a final stand would be taken at the SP’s parliamentary party meet tomorrow at 9.30 am. The SP chief met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to discuss the matter at great length.
“The party is not in agreement with what he (Verma) has said. We do not approve of the statement he has given. Congress has always said that the party men should talk seriously. SP is supporting our government from outside,” party spokesperson Rashid Alvi had said on Monday.
SP chief believes that Verma should apologize in the parliament, while Gandhi has requested Mulayam not to push Verma for a resignation. Nevertheless, SP MPs continue demanding for Verma’s resignation in Parliament.
“I am sorry if my remarks have hurt any body’s sentiments,” said Verma at a public rally in Uttar Pradesh last week.
The statement was dejected by Mulayam since Verma did not clearly mention his name. Later, Verma also maintained that he stood by his statement that Yadav allegedly had terrorist links. The statement created a chaos in the parliament as SP members stormed the Well in both the Houses and demanded the minister’s resignation.
“I had expressed regret over the matter the day before yesterday in the House. They (SP) have not raised the issue after that. I met them yesterday and they are satisfied and the matter is closed,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath told journalists in New Delhi earlier today.
