Pakistan Muslim League-N Chief Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif secretly met British Foreign Secretary Hague during his most recent private trip to London with his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz. The former prime minister received official protocol by Pakistan High Commission and Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO).

The couple was received at the Heathrow Airport by Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamusl Hasan and his wife Begum Zarina Wajid. Sources allege that the former prime minister visited London after confirming his meeting with Britain’s foreign secretary and other Pakistan watchers behind closed doors. The news has been confirmed by a spokesman at the FCO who denied commenting on the agenda of the meeting.

“We can confirm that the foreign secretary met Mr Sharif on Thursday (March 14). It is routine for the foreign secretary to meet with leaders of political parties visiting London,” said the spokesman.

Pakistan High Commission often provides official protocol to all the political icons of PML-N, except Mian Shahbaz Sharif, who prefers travelling in vehicles of his party workers. Wajid Shamusl Hasan said that there is nothing extraordinary in providing protocol to Mian Nawaz Sharif since he is the former prime minister of Pakistan.

“We have provided protocol to Mian Sahib whenever we have been informed by his office of his visit to London,” Wajid said.

The matter is of high significance because western observers believe that PML-N is the frontrunner to win maximum seats in the upcoming general election. The Guardian wrote on Wednesday that PML-N was “the favorite to win the largest number of seats”. The newspaper lauded Shahbaz Sharif’s development projects including Metro Bus Service and claimed that he has successfully impressed the electorates.
