Protests were recorded against the Pakatan Rakyat state government and Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at Komtar on Friday afternoon. Malaysian Rights, a coalition of three NGOs, protested from 1.30pm to 2.15pm while Warisan Anak Merdeka, comprising of Muslim NGOs, protested until 3pm.
Malaysian Rights comprises of Malaysian Youth Rights Movement (MYRM), One Malaysia (1Malaysia) Brothers and Penang Youth Community Organization. Khoo Beng Eam, the president of 1Malaysia Brothers, submitted a 10-point memorandum to Shum Jian Wei, the assistant information officer of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) for Lim’s administration to address.
The crux of the memorandum is to call off the multi-billion tunnel project, put up low-cost housing for disadvantaged Penangites and fulfill DAP’s promises made during the last general election campaign. It also questions Lim on the forthcoming toll charge for the tunnel when his party has always promised to put an end to tolls. Spokesman of the Malaysian Rights, Shen Yee Aun, who heads the MYRM, asked Lim’s administration why free WiFi service for Penang is so disruptive after spending millions on the project. Malaysian Rights has given Lim one week deadline to look into the matters.
On the other hand, the Warisan Anak Merdeka demonstrators condemned Lim for pushing the government to allow use of the word “Allah” in the Christian Bible. Abdul Ghani Haroon distributed a confession letter written by Lim to all Malaysians to the Chief Minister Office assistant information officer, Watawa Nataf. Abdul Ghani said the coalition has given Lim two weeks from today to fulfill the demands.
