Despite multiple threats from several extremist groups, the former president Pervez Musharraf is adamant to return to Pakistan before general elections. The Pakistani Taliban on Saturday threatened to kill Musharraf as soon as he returns to Pakistan.

“We have prepared a special squad of suicide bombers for Musharraf. They will attack Musharraf after he arrives Pakistan,” Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said via telephone.

On the other hand, Musharraf decides to overlook all the threats and contest historic elections in May 11. When asked by a journalist about his return, the former president said, “two hundred percent! I am travelling back on Sunday (March 24, 2013) to Pakistan. I will go by land, air or sea… even to the peril of my life this is the oath I took for the country.”

Musharraf has been in self-imposed exile since August 2008, when Asif Ali Zardari was elected as president. Musharraf is also wanted over the assassination of Zardari’s wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

“I am ready for a long fight but the time has come for me to return and play my role in Pakistani politics. Security is not a concern for me and I have not asked for any security from the government. I will have my own security when I return home. These elections are very important for Pakistan and I think many of these parties are going to be surprised by the results,” Musharraf maintained.

According to Aasia Ishaq, a party official, Musharraf could not return to Pakistan earlier since he had a number of cases pending against him.

“Most of these cases are constitutionally and even otherwise unattainable but tomorrow will be a historic day for Pakistan,” she said.
