Calling the two power centers in UPA a complete failure, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh advised Rahul Gandhi to avoid repeating Sonia Gandhi’s decision of nominating a leader as prime minister.

“Personally, I feel this model hasn’t worked very well. Because, I personally feel there should not be two power centers and I think whoever is the PM must have the authority to function,” the Congress general secretary said.

Singh acknowledged that Sonia had by no means tried to obstruct the government operations during the two UPA stints; however, his statement was the first frank analysis of the situation. Singh has always avoided criticizing the government’s policies; hence, his analysis can be considered a less than flattering assessment of PM Manmohan Singh’s leadership.

“Rahul Gandhi said his priority is welfare of the people. The media assumed he said becoming prime minister is not his priority,” Singh said.

Singh recently denied reports that Rahul was hesitant to become a prime minister and reiterated the concept that the Congress president should also be the PM when the party is in power. According to certain media reports, Rahul had told some party MPs that he would prefer focusing on organizational revival instead of taking charge as Prime Minister.

“He (Rahul Gandhi) has not said ‘no’ anywhere. What is being reported in the press has caused some misconception. If the people of the country want, then why won’t he (become the PM candidate)?” Singh told reporters on Tuesday.
