The Supreme Court raised concerns over the richest man of India enjoying Z-level security while the police department failed to protect a five-year old from getting raped. The apex court was referring to Mukesh Ambani, an Indian business magnate who is the chairman and CEO of the Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited.

A bench headed by Justice GS Singhvi asked the Centre to explain how a businessman is granted state security while a common man remains apprehended in the city.

“A five-year-old girl would not have been raped if there was proper security in the capital,” the bench exclaimed.

“We read in the newspapers that the ministry of home has directed providing for CISF security to an individual. Why is state providing security to such a person? If there is a threat perception, then he (Mukesh) must engage private security personnel. Private businessmen getting security is prevalent in Punjab, but that culture has gone to Mumbai,” Justice Singhvi said.

The government counsel informed the court that unlike policemen, private security personnel were not allowed to carry arms. Hence, a few businessmen have been given Z-level security for their protection.

“We are not concerned about the security of X, Y, Z persons, but about the security of common man!” Justice Singhvi remarked.

The Union home ministry directed to provide Z security to Mukesh Ambani in March 2013 after he claimed that the Indian Mujahideen have threatened to harm him. Ambani is footing the bill for the top-grade security, usually reserved for prominent politicians.
