Pakistani special prosecutor assigned on Benazir Bhutto murder case has been shot dead in Islamabad. Unidentified men opened fire at Chauhdry Zulfiqar Ali, a state prosecutor for the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), while he was driving to court on Friday. He was immediately rushed to the nearest medical facility where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Chaudhry Zulfiqar was driving his car. He lost control and the car crushed a woman passer-by. Zulfiqar was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” police officer Mohammad Yousuf told the media.

Zulfiqar’s bodyguard was also wounded and a woman passer-by killed. The attack happened in broad daylight in a busy street in a middle-class neighborhood.

Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf is under house arrest for alleged involvement in the case. He is accused of failing to provide sufficient security to Bhutto upon her return to Pakistan. Musharraf recently returned to Pakistan after five years of self-imposed exile and was arrested on court’s orders for several charges.

Zulfiqar argued in the court that Musharraf should not be granted bail. Musharraf has only received modest support from the public and almost none from the political establishment. The situation has allegedly alarmed the military.

Zulfiqar was due to appear at the Anti-Terrorism Court in the nearby city of Rawalpindi on Friday in connection with the case. The incident has alarmed the security forces and revitalized the debate on conspiracy theories.

“I cannot comment. I’m in a state of shock,” Zulfiqar’s deputy Azhar Chaudhry told the media when asked to comment.
