Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has been directed to avoid airing controversial paid content from different political parties on television channels. A bench of Lahore High Court passed the orders on Friday in response to a writ petition filed by the PML-N.
PPP-P has paid several television channels to air a video containing telephonic conversation between former CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and Justice (Retd.) Malik Qayyum. Taking notice of the malicious advertisement, Mian Shahbaz Sharif denied having any such conversation with the said Justice and accused PPP-P of misleading the electorates.
Advocate Salman Aslam Butt, representative of PML-N, insists that the advertisement being aired by TV channels on behalf of the PPP-P is clear violation of the Constitution and code of conduct issued by the ECP. The high court bench has directed the Pemra to submit a written reply on Saturday and also issued a notice to PPP-P.
In the meantime, PML-N leadership seems to have kept its cool. Talking to the media on Friday, son of Mian Shabaz Sharif, Hamza Shahbaz Sharif expressed hope that his party wins just enough seats so that it would not have to rely on other parties to form government in the National Assembly. However, he claimed that he would still want to keep other parties on board. He said the challenges faced by the country can only be resolved if all the political parties work in the best interest of Pakistan.
