Despite denying any involvement with the corruption allegations against his nephew, Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal is expected to offer his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while Congress’ core group is to meet on Saturday and take vital decision about the situation.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Vijay Singla, nephew of the railway minister, on Friday. Singla is accused of accepting Rs. 90 lakh in bribe from a member of the Railway Board in exchange for a senior position.

Bansal has completely denied having any knowledge about the deal. He said there is no business relationship between him and Singla. On the other hand, BJP members are recurrently accusing Bansal of corruption while calling the UPA a government full of dealers and brokers. The opposition has demanded Bansal to step down.

“Regarding yesterday’s incident involving my sister’s firm in a CBI raid at Chandigarh, I have to say that I have no knowledge or proof about the matter at all. Though a close relative, he or any other relative of mine does not and cannot meddle in my official function or influence my decision. There is also no business relationship between his and my family,” Bansal told the media.

Bansal has recently taken charge as a Railways Minister after Mamata Banerjee pulled her Trinamool Congress out of the ruling coalition. Trinamool leader Derk O’brien has termed the arrest shameful for the Congress.
