Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt had second thoughts about surrendering before Yerwada jail in Pune and withdrew his plea filed in a TADA court in Mumbai on Tuesday. Dutt was involved in the 1993 Mumbai blasts and was given 5-year prison sentence. The actor will surrender by May 16 to undergo the remaining 42 months of jail term.

Dutt was convicted by the TADA court for illegally possessing a 9 mm pistol and AK-56 rifles, which were part of a consignment of weapons and explosives brought to India for coordinated serial blasts that killed 257 people and injured over 700 in 1993.

Earlier, the apex court rejected his review petition maintaining that his appeal has no merit and the decision to uphold his conviction will be sustained. A bench of P Sathasivam and BS Chauhan also rejected similar review petitions of Yusuf Mohsin Nulwalla, Khalil Ahmed Sayed Ali Nazir, Mohamed Dawood Yusuf Khan, Shaikh Asif Yusuf, Muzammil Umar Kadri and Mohd Ahmed Shaikh.

Last month, the apex court agreed to extend Dutt’s surrender time to another four weeks before he serves the remaining jail time. Supreme Court has already reduced to five years the six-year jail-term awarded to him by a designated TADA court in 2006.

Jaya Bachchan, Member of Parliament and veteran actor, requested the Maharashtra governor, K Sankarnarayanan, to pardon Sanjay since he is a changed man now.

“I agree with everyone that he has suffered a lot. I believe that he should not be given such a big punishment. He is a changed man now. I’m going to personally appeal governor and ask him to pardon him,” said Mrs Bachchan.
