Analysts believe that history is in the making with a not-so-new political party in Pakistan proving its existence and importance in the key areas of the country after May 11 general elections. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf Party has emerged as the second largest party in the polls. PTI Chief, former cricketer Imran Khan is often credited for encouraging the huge middleclass of the country to cast their votes.

Although the tigers of Punjab won majority vote and would be forming the central government, the complaints of widespread rigging are prevailing from many corners of the country. In the wake of similar complaints, the Election Commission of Pakistan announced a re-poll in many constituencies of Karachi. According to unofficial results, candidates of PTI have won the race.

The political situation in Karachi has been worsening ever since the PTI workers came forward to demand fair and free elections. The ECP accepted its failure to provide security and transparent voting facilities in Karachi on May 11. The issue disrupted the stability of the strongest party in Karachi – the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Senior leadership of MQM has voiced its concerns and in the midst of the protests, Chief of MQM publically threatened to kill PTI protestors in Karachi, hoping to disperse them by spreading terror.

PTI core committee member Zara Shahid Hussain was shot dead a day before re-poll in Karachi. PTI chief Imran Khan has held MQM chief Altaf Hussain and the British government responsible for her murder.

“I hold (MQM leader) Altaf Hussain directly responsible for the murder as he openly threatened PTI workers and leaders through public broadcasts,” Khan, recovering in hospital from a fall during campaigning, said in a tweet. “I also hold the British government responsible as I had warned them about British citizen Altaf Hussain after his open threats.”
