A top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant has been shot dead in crossfire with a police squad in Srinagar on Thursday. Hilal Molvi was accused of killing several civilians in Pattan and Sopore area of north Kashmir.

Police personnel cordoned off the Narparistan in Fatehkadal area after receiving tips on the militant’s whereabouts. Molvi allegedly opened fire at the security force when he felt they were in close proximity to his residence. As a result of the crossfire, Molvi was shot dead while three policemen received grave injuries.

Security forces have been looking for the militant and his allegiances for about two months. Sensing the danger, Molvi had taken refuge in the city. Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari confirmed the news saying that Maulvi was a top-ranking LeT commander who was also involved in a fidayeen attack at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Police Public School at Bemina, in Srinagar outskirts, on March 13.

There have been differences of opinion on Molvi’s criminal profile. On one hand, security forces describe him as LeT’s most wanted militant in North Kashmir, while on the other hand, separatist political groups, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani-led faction of the Hurriyat Conference, mention him as a political activist. These political groups have often confirmed that Maulvi does not have links with any guerrilla group.
